Camping, Recreation, & History
Plumas Eureka State Park offers interpretive events, such as campfire programs, nature walks, history tours, during the summer season. Hiking, fishing, picnicking, and other similar outdoor activities are quite popular with visitors. During their Living History Days events during the summer, volunteers dress in period costumes and lead you through what it was like to live in the community of Johnsville, one of the original towns that sprang up around the mines.The park is also home to the Johnsville Museum, which is open 7 days a week from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m, featuring exhibits on natural history, hard rock mining, local history and more. Conservation Group
As they detail in their mission statement: Trout Unlimited protects and restores "North America's trout and salmon fisheries and their watersheds." They further that mission by engaging in education, conservation, remediation and partnership efforts that benefit the coldwater fisheries in the Feather River drainage. Historic Railroad Museum
The Western Pacific Railroad Museum located in Portola is a "hands-on" museum with over 100 pieces of rolling stock in their collection. Among these are an example of the Mighty "Centennial" and a Union Pacific DDA40X locomotive, the largest diesel locomotive ever built. The museum has many cars and artifacts of the "The most talked about train in America" - the California Zephyr. They also have one of the largest collections of cabooses in the country, and invite visitors to ride. For a truly unique experience, find out about the Run A Locomotive program and experience for yourself what it's like to be a freight Conductor.
