GRAND MARSHALL

Kathy & Tim Kurdupski

Kathy & Tim KurdupskiTim was born and raised in Graeagle (one of our natives!) and Cathy hails from the Bay Area – they met at the Sattley Cash Store in the 80’s. At that time, Tim was known as the hermit and Cathy was the “hermitess” of Sattley.

They have owned and operated The Mill Works Restaurant in downtown Graeagle for seventeen years. Tim’s mom was the one who started the Mill Works in 1979.

Tim has been an active member of the Mohawk Valley Independence Day Committee for 15 years. He is a member and co-founder of the Graeagle Merchants Association. He is an avid fisherman and a member and past-president of Trout Unlimited. Cathy’s hobbies include golf, bowling and bridge.

Thank you both for all you do for Graeagle – the Mill Works is always a fun place to visit and eat – the restaurant has a reputation for great home-made soups – stop in and say hello!!

COMMUNITY APPRECIATION AWARD

Rotary Club of Portola

The club performs both LOCAL & INTERNATIONAL service projects. The club’s local service in 2008 includes a backpack project. The club will be donating 200 backpacks filled with school supplies to needy children at C. Roy Carmichael Elementary School. The packs and supplies have been purchased and put together and are just waiting for August School Orientation for distribution. The Interact Club (the High School version of Rotary) helps to put the backpacks together and also helped at local fund-raisers.  Another project is the building of a sandblasted redwood sign to be installed in June for the Community Arts Center on Commercial Street in Portola. Another important project is serving breakfast in Johnsville each year at Plumas Eureka State Park with all proceeds going to the park museum. 2007 was the best year yet with over 500 breakfasts served.

The Portola Club’s International Service includes helping the Loyalton Club collect children’s books to take to the L.A. Rotary International Convention to be distributed around the world. Another project this year is working with the Chester Club to build a water well in Fiji to provide clean water to a community in this island nation. This will help reduce the incidence of  disease among children and allow the community to become more independent as a result of entrepreneurial endeavors that take the place of time spent hauling water. Also, the club donated four wheelchairs to the Angel Wheelchair Foundation that were distributed in Belize and Bolivia.

The fundraisers used to support these projects include the Fish Derby on June 7, participation in several events during RR Days, the Fly-in Breakfast on September 9, the Snowmobile Poker Run in February and providing beverage services at various events. The success of these endeavors can be attributed in large part  to support from the Portola & Graeagle communities.

SPONSORS

Our sincere thanks to all who help sponsor this event through your generous donations. Without your support these Independence Day events would not be possible. Fund raising, it seems, is the most challenging aspect of any organized event.  It is very gratifying when so many community members, organizations, businesses, property owners, and individuals demonstrate their unified support.  It shows you care about the quality of life and the future of your community.

We wish also to thank those of you who support the MVID events through participation in the various fund-raising events.
