GET READY FOR THE 2007 MOHAWK VALLEY INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION celebrating freedom with the theme “STAR-SPANGLED SPECTACULAR .” Plan ahead for this family friendly event by marking your calendar for the yearly hometown celebration that only Graeagle can offer. From family friendly street dancing and barbecue in Blairsden, an aerial fireworks display over Graeagle Mill Pond, and the spectacular MVID Parade/Day in the Park events, Graeagle is the place to be on Fourth of July weekend.

Betty Heck

Betty moved to Graeagle in the late 1970's from Piedmont, CA. She retired from the American Lung Association some fourteen years ago and being a busy person went to work helping to improve and expand the Eastern Plumas Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber now boasts a membership of over two hundred and fifty businesses. She has been awarded the Golden Tourism Provider Award from Plumas Corporation.

Betty has been active in the Soroptimist International of Portola since coming to Plumas County. She plays a major role with the Mohawk Independence Day Committee. She helps to raise funds to provide a hometown Fourth of July we all enjoy. Betty was a member of the committee that accompanied the National Christmas Tree from Plumas County to Washington, D.C. Betty is an avid needlepointer and bridge player, loves to travel and has attended many elderhostels.

COMMUNITY APPRECIATION AWARD

Horses Unlimited, Inc.

Horses Unlimited, Inc. (HUI) was started in the summer of 1944. It is a Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation dedicated to providing therapeutic horseback riding for children and adults with special needs.

This program is designed to give each rider the opportunity to expand the limits of their abilities in a safe environment. Riders at HUI range in age from two to fifty years old. Some of their disabilities include multiple sclerosis, developmental disabilities, hearing and visual impairments, and autism.
Each student is carefully matched to a suitable horse. There are seven horses of various sizes and abilities working at HUI. All of them are part of this program because of their special temperaments and patience.

The Horses Unlimited, Inc. therapeutic riding program also addresses a drawback in rural life for people with special needs. The program not only offers therapy, but a recreational opportunity that is often closed to the disabled who live in a rural setting.

In addition to a riding instructor, each student is assisted by up to three volunteers (a horse handler and two side walkers). Over the years, more than 60 individuals have volunteered their time to perform the many tasks that created and now maintain HUI.

HUI is currently providing spring riding sessions at the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds through June, and fall sessions will take place at Graeagle Stables during September and October.

All of this has been accomplished by a mostly volunteer workforce. Join us by becoming a volunteer! (836-4551)

Fund raising, it seems, is the most challenging aspect of any organized event. It is very gratifying when so many community members, organizations, businesses, property owners, and individuals demonstrate their unified support. It shows you care about the quality of life and the future of your community.

We wish also to thank those of you who support the MVID events through participation in the various fund-raising events.

An extra thank you should be given to Harvey and Dan West for their support, and for providing personnel for the setup & cleanup of numerous activities. This event would not be possible without the West’s offering the use of the Mill Pond area for the aerial fireworks display, and the Green for the Park Festivities.
